Before joining Northumbira University, he held research and academic positions respectively in Newcaslte University, University of Liverpool, University of Leicester, University of Manchester, University of Duisburg-Essen, and Tianjin University. 

He was elevated to IEEE Fellow for contributions to real-time diagnosis and control for wind turbine systems in 2023. He is awarded the RAEng / Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship devoting to real-time diagnosis and health management for wave energy conversion systems in 2024. He is also the Fellow of AAIA, Fellow of AIIA, and Fellow of HEA.

Dr. Gao is currently the Co-EIC of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, Senior Editor of IEEE Access, Area Editor of Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing (Springer), Assoicate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics: Systems, and  ISA Transactions (Elsevier), and the editorial board member of Renewable Energy (Elsevier).

He was the Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, and IEEE Transactions on Industral Electronics.
