Dr Se Kwang Hwang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communities and Education at Northumbria University, UK. He serves as the School Ethics Lead for the School of Communities and Education and leads the Autism and AI Research Team. He is also an active member of several research groups, including Disability, Neurodiversity, Mental Distress and Lived Experience, Inclusive Education, and Race and Migrants IDRT.
Drawing on extensive practitioner and activist experience in South Korea, Dr Hwang has worked with grassroots and third-sector organisations to promote the rights and wellbeing of disabled people.
He has published in leading journals such as Disability & Society, The British Journal of Social Work, and the Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities, and has contributed book chapters on autistic parenting, disabled children and families, and disability issues in East Asia.
His funded and collaborative projects include research on autistic parents’ experiences, disability employment, welfare reform, and ethics in biomedical research. His recent work explores disability activism and policy in South Korea and the UK, contributing to international debates on decolonising disability studies and challenging ableist welfare systems.
Dr Hwang serves on the Editorial Board of Disability & Society and is a regular reviewer for several high-impact journals and UKRI funding applications. He leads several undergraduate modules across the BSc Social Work and BSc Health and Social Care programmes.
