Kristen Pickering

I joined the School of Design at Northumbria University in 2004 after 10 years industrial experience as a designer in the Fashion industry working internationally. I have teaching experience on level 3, Design Foundation and level 4-6 on BA Fashion with a focus on Printed Surface Textiles. I drive both my subject at a module level and until recently lead and managed the programme over a 5 year period during which the programme was restructured and revalidated allowing us to adapt to future developments in fashion.

I am Collaborative Partnership Manager for both BA Fashion and BA Fashion Design and Marketing programmes with Academy of Design, Colombo, Sri Lanka, a fascinating link that shows that Design is a skill that successfully translates across cultures.

I am intrigued by different approaches to learning students demonstrate and the role drawing plays in communicating this. Emerging from a prolonged period of online delivery, I firmly believe studio culture and in integrated learning environment is essential to a designer’s development in preparation for a life of collaboration.
