Midwifery Studies Postgraduate Diploma

Why did you decide to study midwifery?

Working as a Nursery Nurse for 20yrs mostly within the health care sector, I was fortunate enough to work alongside some excellent Midwives and Nurses who inspired me to make the step towards a career change and Midwifery was always the first choice.

Why did you chose Northumbria to study at?

Truthfully, the proximity to home and the practice placement choices available. However I did attend for a module prior to applying and also attended the MW taster course and open days where I found Northumbria to have a good atmosphere and amenities.

What has been your best/most memorable experience of the course so far?

Witnessing and assisting at water births, one in the community and the other in the hospital setting. You just feel so privileged to be part of such a special experience.

What has been your most challenging moment so far?

Sitting an exam for the first time in years! Very scary.

What piece of advice would you give to students thinking about coming onto your course?

Get as much information as you can about Midwifery (both positive and negative) so you are sure its for you, then take each day as it comes as there will be lows as well as highs but it is all worth it.

What do you hope to do upon graduation?

After graduation... a sunny family holiday to thank them for being so supportive, then frantically trying to secure a job of which I hope there are plenty of in 2010.

Where do you see your career in five years time?

In 5yrs time, ideally practicing as a MW in Australia and still enjoying it!
