Inmaculada N. Sanchez-Garcia

PhD in English Literature

I am currently in the final stages of a PhD project titled 'Shakespeare in European Cinema'. My PhD examines Shakespeare’s reception in European cinema, offering a series of comparative analyses of under-studied films that either adapt, quote or allude to Shakespeare’s works. Adopting a transnational approach to explore Shakespeare’s pan-European presence on film, my main research questions are:

  • How is Shakespeare mobilised in European cinema?
  • What does Shakespeare’s reception in European film tell us about supranational realities and transcultural negotiations that have contributed to define and re-define European identity?
  • How do film adaptations, quotations and allusions to the English playwright function in specific European sociopolitical contexts?

  • Since 2014: PhD in English Literature, Northumbria University
  • 2013 – 2014: MA in European Comparative Literature, University of Murcia (Spain)
  • 2009 – 2013: BA in English Studies, University of Murcia (Spain)
  • 2006 – 2009: BA in Education, University of Castilla la Mancha (Spain)

My research interests include Shakespeare studies, film studies, transnational cinema, comparative literature, literary theory, cultural studies, border theory, queer studies, gender studies, postcolonial theory, European cinema and world cinema.
