Dan Peacock

Case Study

Daniel changed his mind about going to university, which brought him to Northumbria through the Clearing process.

After getting better grades than he was anticipating, Daniel was encouraged by his head of year at school to explore his options and look at university courses. “I was familiar with Newcastle and some of my friends had just been accepted at Northumbria,” he said.

“I really enjoyed studying business at school and was particularly interested in marketing, so was pleased when I found a degree at Northumbria which combined both subjects. Not to mention the fact that Northumbria has one of the best business schools in the country.”

Daniel was looking forward to a new challenge, which a degree in business would offer. “At school I did a lot of solo work and so was excited at the prospect of being part of team projects. I can appreciate how working with other students on assignments will help me to develops skills which I will later use in the workplace,” he said

“There are loads of places to study on campus. Whether you need to be somewhere quiet like the library, or collaborative to do group work, there’s always somewhere to go. Digital Commons and Habita at the Students’ Union, are my go-to places for group meetings!”

When Daniel chose Northumbria, he moved into Trinity Square which is a university-owned student accommodation. “Living in student halls is a great way to make friends and Trinity Square had everything I needed. Having Tesco on my doorstep and a metro station which took me straight to campus – it felt more like a village than a block of flats. Plus, I had an amazing view overlooking St James’ Park and the rest of the city.”

Reflecting on the clearing process, Daniel said: “The idea of coming to university through clearing is a lot more stressful than the actual experience. And it’s really straight forward! I called the hotline on my lunch break from work and before it was over, I had been accepted onto my course.”

“My advice would be to research the courses you’re interested in and don’t panic. Take your time, to make the right choice for you.”

Northumbria University has a limited number of places available for high quality students through Clearing this summer. For more information, visit www.northumbria.ac.uk/clearing or call the Clearing Hotline on 0800 085 1085.
